The New World Quail are very different from songbirds, the avian group for which we know the most about evolution and behavior. We want to discover and tell the story of the evolution of the Callipepla quail. This story has several chapters, including: Who was the ancestral Callipepla? We are using phylogenomic and systematic techniques to ask the basic question: what are the characteristics of the ancestral species of the Callipepla genus? This is Chapter … Continue reading
Our Research
We study evolutionary processes in the highly charismatic Callipepla quail species. Because of their unique life histories, studying these birds offers a distinct window into the evolution of species, their behavior and plumage and their response to environmental variation such as climate change.
There are four species of Callipepla quail: California, Gambel’s, scaled and elegant quail.Scientist at Work
